Janet Leiper is an experienced criminal and administrative law litigator. She has been a certified specialist in criminal law (C.S.) since 1995 and now serves as the Chair of the Certified Specialist Board which oversees the certification process for all lawyers in Ontario. She has prosecuted and defended jury and non-jury cases. She has acted for witnesses. Her experience includes matters such as Fraud, Homicide, NCR Applications, Dangerous Offender Proceedings; Sexual Assault, Aggravated Assault, Arson, Theft of Telecommunications, Breaking and Entering, Robbery, Dangerous Driving. As former counsel to the Ontario Review Board and as a member of the board, her experience with the mental health provisions of the Criminal Code is extensive. She has taught, written and published in the area, including the publication of a thesis on the subject of resort to habeas corpus to enforce dispositions made under Part XX.1 of the Criminal Code.
In addition to advocacy, she has lectured and spoken extensively including as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto and as a Visiting Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, where she taught Criminal Procedure, as well as Ethical Lawyering in a Global Community. For seven years, she served as the Head of Section in Criminal Law for the Bar Admission Course, Law Society of Upper Canada.
